Dr Salma Anas Kolo, daughter of former deputy governor in Borno state and a former commissioner of health in the same state, has made history by becoming the first woman from northern Nigeria to be appointed as health adviser to the President.
Her appointment came after her outstanding performance as a director with the federal ministry of health and her stint with the UN.
Dr Salma Anas Kolo, a medical doctor with a passion for improving the health sector in Nigeria, has been a trailblazer in her field. As a former commissioner of health in Borno, she worked tirelessly to improve healthcare services in the state. Her efforts were recognized when she was appointed as a director with the federal ministry of health, where she continued to make significant contributions to the health sector.
In her new role as health adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dr Salma Anas Kolo is expected to use her wealth of experience to help improve the health sector in Nigeria. Her appointment has been hailed by many as a step in the right direction, as it is believed that her expertise will be instrumental in achieving the government’s goal of providing quality healthcare services to all Nigerians.

Salma Anas-Kolo was born on March 23, 1966, and her passion for humanitarian and community development work was inspired by her father, Ibrahim Anas.
Her father, Late father Ibrahim Anas was a retired police officer from the Silumthla ward of Biu Local Government Area who went into politics in 1977. He served as chairman of Biu LGA and later became the deputy governor of Borno State from 1979 to 1983. Until his death on December 8, 2008, he also served on the boards of several government agencies and parastatals.
Salma grew up in Maiduguri, where she completed her primary education at Shehu Garbai Primary School in 1978. She then obtained her O’ level certificate from Government Girls College Maidugri five years later. Salma went on to the University of Maiduguri, where she earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1978.
Salma Anas-Kolo is married to Hashim Muhammad Kolo, a retired Air Commodore from the Nigerian Air Force. They have five children.
