The Nigerian military has successfully neutralized two high-ranking ISWAP Commanders, Amir Malam Bello and Amir Malam Musa Modu, along with numerous fighters in carefully coordinated airstrikes near Lake Chad in Borno State. The airstrikes took place on Friday, June 16, 2023, and targeted the river banks of Jibularam and Sabon Tumbum in Marte Local Government Area.

These decisive victories were achieved through meticulous Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that identified the location of the terrorist leaders and their fighters. Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, received this information from intelligence sources.

Following the airstrikes, ground assessments indicated that the two commanders and scores of terrorists were killed, while the surviving and wounded Mujahideens fled towards the axis of Tudun Wulgo and Ngilewa. The operation was led by Maj Gen Ibrahim Ali, the Theatre Commander of the North East Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, working in conjunction with surface forces.

This successful offensive is part of OPERATION WARUN 3, an ongoing campaign aimed at eradicating Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists from the North East. The Nigerian Airforce has continued to play a crucial role in this mission, with the airstrikes being a testament to their dedication and efficiency.

The elimination of Amir Malam Bello and Amir Malam Musa Modu represents a significant blow to the terrorist organization, as their leadership was crucial to planning and executing attacks. The Nigerian military’s ongoing efforts to dismantle ISWAP and restore peace in the region have been met with praise and support from the international community.

As the OPERATION WARUN 3 campaign continues, the Nigerian military remains committed to securing the nation and protecting its citizens from the ongoing threat of terrorism. The successful airstrikes near Lake Chad demonstrate the military’s resolve and capabilities, reinforcing their position as a formidable force against terrorist organizations.
