In a dynamic address to Mass Communication students at Redeemer’s University, my friend and brother, a renowned journalist and former Chief Press Secretary to the past Osun Governor, Ismail Omipidan, emphasized the importance of mentorship and embracing professional ethics for a flourishing career in the media industry.

Omipidan, a guest speaker at the university’s Mass Communication Students Association (RUMSA) Colloquium, urged the students to be guided by their conscience and to champion the ethical standards of their profession.

He boldly stated that these values form the foundation for success and prosperity in the highly competitive media landscape.

Discussing the theme “Gown to Town: Preparing for the Industry, Unlocking the Potential,” Omipidan encouraged students to begin preparing for the rigors of the job market by equipping themselves with the knowledge and skills required in their chosen profession. He challenged them to hone their writing, reading, and analytical skills, stressing that these are prerequisites for success, particularly in journalism.

The former Editor placed significant emphasis on the importance of adhering to professional tenets, as well as developing character and integrity to make a lasting impact on the world. Drawing from his experiences with Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and his principal, former Osun Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Omipidan shared valuable insights into the powerful connections and opportunities journalism can offer.

Omipidan’s wisdom resonated with the audience as he advised them to prioritize building a solid reputation and forging meaningful relationships in their careers rather than focusing solely on wealth.

He explained that journalism is a noble profession that thrives on integrity, character and an unwavering commitment to holding those in power accountable.

With the wisdom of a seasoned mentor, Omipidan shared practical advice for aspiring print journalists, emphasizing the importance of reading and writing well. He also highlighted the courage, self-confidence, and integrity necessary to excel in the industry.

Omipidan’s inspirational guidance provided a shining example of the power of mentorship in shaping the careers of the next generation of media professionals. By sharing his experiences and insights, he illuminated the path to success and inspired his audience to pursue their passion with a strong foundation of ethics and integrity.

His address at the Colloquium also touched on the broader implications of the media’s role in society. He emphasized the significance of Mass Communication as a critical component of socioeconomic and political development. He stressed the importance of viewing the study and practice of the discipline as a call to duty.

Listening to the rich words of a guru, the students in attendance were undoubtedly encouraged to consider their future roles as societal watchdogs and agenda setters, responsible for shaping public discourse and holding power to account. Omipidan urged them to take this responsibility seriously and to strive for excellence in their professional and personal conduct.

In addition to sharing insights from his illustrious career, Omipidan offered practical tips for navigating the industry’s challenges. He advised the students to be courageous, to display good manners in professional settings, and to seize every opportunity to learn and grow.

As the Colloquium concluded, there is no doubt that Ismail’s message had struck a chord with the aspiring media professionals in attendance. His words of wisdom not only provided valuable guidance but also reinforced the importance of mentorship in fostering professional growth and development.

Omipidan’s message to the students is a powerful reminder of the impact a dedicated mentor can have on the lives and careers of young professionals. By sharing his experiences, wisdom, and passion for the media profession, he has not only inspired the audience but has also laid the groundwork for a new generation of ethical, skilled, and dedicated media practitioners.
