MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, urged a committee on Sunday to expedite the reconstruction of the Maiduguri Monday Market, urging for a swift resumption of business operations.

The bustling trade hub was devastated by a fire disaster on February 26, 2023, leading to the loss of property worth billions of Naira. In response, Zulum released N2 billion to a committee, with half of the sum allocated as palliative for victims and the remainder for the immediate reconstruction of the market.

Governor Zulum, during an unscheduled visit to the market, emphasized the urgency of the project’s completion, acknowledging the economic hardship faced by traders and residents who depend on the market for their daily needs. He insisted on the use of the market’s original master plan during reconstruction to mitigate potential future fire disasters.

The governor, having visited the site multiple times, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing reconstruction work. He assured residents that the revitalized market would feature improved facilities, fostering a dynamic economic environment.

Donations from prominent citizens and allies of Borno State are being directed into a special account for the project. The timely completion of the market’s reconstruction is expected to restore economic activities and uplift the morale of the local residents.

The Maiduguri Monday Market, once a vibrant center of commerce, is on its way to regaining its former glory under Governor Zulum’s watch, promising a prosperous future for business activities in the area.
