Borno State’s Governor, Babagana Zulum, has initiated a significant step towards enhancing maternal health by launching the distribution of free maternal drugs valued at over N800m. This initiative, aimed at five general hospitals, marks a significant stride in the state’s commitment to maternal healthcare services.

The distribution ceremony occurred at the Borno State Medical Store in Maiduguri, setting a new precedent for healthcare in the state.

The hospitals that benefit from this initiative include the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, Mohammed Shuwa Memorial Hospital, Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital, Mariam Abatcha Children Hospital, and Molai General Hospital. Each of these hospitals will receive an N5m grant in addition to the drugs, with the State Specialist Hospital, being the largest, receiving an extra N5m.

Governor Zulum, during the launch, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We are here today to commence the distribution of essential maternal drugs and supplies to some of our hospitals, focusing on the most vulnerable groups in our state. This initiative will not only reduce maternal mortality rates but also enhance childcare services in the state,” he stated.

In addition to the drugs, the governor also distributed surgical and laboratory equipment to improve further healthcare service delivery for the citizens of Borno State.

Governor Zulum urged the Hospital Management Board to demonstrate increased dedication to their roles. He encouraged all health sector workers to show patience and dedication, promising the government would address their welfare concerns, including call allowances.

However, the governor also warned sternly against any form of laxity among the healthcare workers. He emphasized that his administration had made substantial investments in the health sector over the past four years and would not tolerate any form of ineptitude.

The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Baba Mallam Gana, and the Chief Medical Director, Professor Bukar Kullima, expressed their gratitude to the governor for his unwavering commitment and support to the health sector in Borno State.
