Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, addressed the skill gap among Nigerian university graduates during a lecture at the University of Ibadan’s 75th-anniversary celebrations on Monday.
Zulum, in the first of a series of lectures commemorating the anniversary, titled “Leadership, Citizenship, and Meeting Contemporary Social Justice in Nigeria,” underscored the mismatch between the skills graduates possess and what the labor market demands. The Governor pointed out that this discrepancy contributes to high unemployment rates, underemployment, and decreased productivity.
In the face of these challenges, he emphasized the pivotal role universities play in preparing future workforces, urging them to adapt continually to the shifting demands of the job market.
“Our universities must put more effort into research and forging links to industries that can convert ideas into practical solutions that can be sold locally and internationally. We should restructure our university system to become hubs of idea production and solutions that can draw large-scale investments,” Zulum advised.
He cited rapid technological advancements, evolving industry needs, and insufficient curricula in many tertiary institutions as major issues. However, Zulum also highlighted the value of practical skills, such as entrepreneurship and vocational training, in enabling graduates and non-formal education attendees to successfully navigate the labor market.
Drawing on his administration’s experiences, he mentioned the construction of five large-scale Vocational Training Institutes and 19 smaller Technical and Vocational Training Institutes across Borno State within five years to tackle unemployment and youth restlessness.
Zulum challenged Nigerian citizens to embody patriotism while holding their leaders accountable. “While we acknowledge that progress takes time, we all must demonstrate leadership in our respective spheres,” he stated.
University of Ibadan Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, lauded the Governor for his contributions and identification with the university.
Zulum was accompanied by Engr. Bawu Musami, Borno State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Barrister Mustapha Ali Busuguma, Principal Secretary to the Governor, and several other senior officials of the Borno State Government. High-ranking members of the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers were also part of his entourage.
