At least two lives were lost and many homes razed as a fire outbreak engulfed an IDP camp in Maiduguri the capital of Borno state, Northeast Nigeria.
The devastating fire that broke out around noon at Muna camp for internally displaced persons wreaked havoc, engulfing numerous homes, particularly those constructed with thatched roofs. It wasn’t until approximately an hour later that the firefighters arrived on the scene, desperately battling the flames.
Muna IDP camp is an unofficial camp that continues to exist in Maiduguri, even after the government closed down the official camps.
Abba Modu, a security personnel of the CJTF who witnessed the incident said “Two children who could not escape the fire were burnt to death.”
The fire, according to Modu, started at the time most of the adult dwellers of the camp were away on their farms leaving their children at home.
“More than a hundred homes have so far been burnt in this unfortunate incident,” he said.
