In an unprecedented move to alleviate economic distress in the Borno Central Senatorial District, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, a first-time Barrister turned lawmaker, has rolled out a comprehensive economic empowerment program benefiting 1,720 constituents across eight local government areas.
The empowerment package, a diverse array of equipment and financial support, was ceremoniously flagged off by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, illustrating a concerted effort to support grassroots development.

The scheme encompasses 500 sewing machines, 500 grinding machines, 250 deep freezers, 100 generators, 50 block-making machines, 250 agricultural tools, 50 refrigerators, and 20 tricycles (Keke Napep), each aimed at fostering entrepreneurial growth and self-sufficiency.
In addition to the equipment, each beneficiary received a cash grant of N20,000, a financial boost to leverage the potential of the physical assets provided.
At the heart of this initiative is the Senator’s response to the economic challenges that have escalated following the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidies in June 2023—a policy change that has affected broad swathes of the Nigerian populace.

Governor Zulum lauded Senator Kaka Shehu’s initiative, noting its significance in not just alleviating poverty but also in contributing to the economic vibrancy of the region. He stated, “This is a commendable step towards empowering our people and creating a sustainable foundation for economic growth.”
Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, addressing the gathering, underscored that the distribution was a fulfillment of his electoral promises and reiterated his commitment to the welfare of his constituents. “Our mission is to provide a lifeline to those hit hardest by the economic situation and to create opportunities for prosperity,” he said.

The event saw the presence of key political figures, including the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori, APC Borno State Chairman Hon. Bello Ayuba, and House of Representatives member representing Maiduguri, Abdulkadir Rahis, each expressing their support for the Senator’s visionary approach.
The economic empowerment program not only sets a precedent for other lawmakers to follow but also ignites hope among the beneficiaries who now have the tools and funds to navigate through the economic turbulence of post-subsidy Nigeria.
