Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has inaugurated the construction of a new flyover in Maiduguri, the state capital, marking the third of such project under his administration so far.
The West-End Roundabout flyover, awarded at the cost of over 7.9 billion naira, is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure within the state’s capital.
“By the grace of God this flyover bridge will not only add to the aesthetics of the city but it’s construction will create jobs for thousands of people and also ease vehicular movement within the city,” he said .
“We have addressed the problems of traffic congestion with the Customs flyover bridge and recently we did same at Borno Express junction and insha Allah [by the grace of God] we shall construct the fourth flyover to address traffic congestion at the Post Office area before we leave office.”
The groundbreaking ceremony for the West End flyover on Saturday, saw the presence of notable figures including Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan and Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijjani.
This latest endeavour follows the successful launch of Borno’s first flyover at the Customs roundabout, commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari, and a second structure which is ready for commissioning.
Governor Zulum, speaking at the event, reiterated his commitment to the urban renewal of key cities in Borno, particularly within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

“We are not only committed to enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our cities but also to alleviating traffic congestion and generating employment opportunities for our youth,” he declared.
The governor further assured that funding for the project is secured, with 50% already disbursed to the contractor, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), and promised timely payments to facilitate the swift completion of the project.
The Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr Mustapha Gubio, provided technical details of the flyover, highlighting its 470m length and modern safety features designed to ensure the stability and protection of pedestrians.
EEC’s representative, Mr Gao Kun, guaranteed high-quality construction standards and adherence to the project timeline, much to the reassurance of the governor.
As Governor Zulum’s tenure approaches its conclusion in 2027, he affirms his dedication to completing all four projected overhead bridges, ensuring that his governance leaves a legacy of infrastructural progress and enhanced quality of life for the citizens of Borno State.
The governor said 50 percent of the cost of the third flyover construction has been paid to the contractor with a caveat that the state government will not entertain any variation in the original cost.
