Honorable Abdulkadir Rahis, the Federal representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Federal Constituency of Borno State, has delivered rice palliative to about 4,794 people spread across 794 households struggling under the combined pressure of economic downturn and the aftermath of the Boko Haram insurgency.
At the Mechanical Workshop in Maiduguri, Rahis flagged off the distribution on Tuesday, emphasizing the critical need to support his constituents during these trying times.
Among the recipients, Rahis highlighted that 100 elderly men, 200 female-led households, 160 insurgency victims, 40 APC stakeholders, and 194 other vulnerable families from the 15 wards of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council were carefully selected to benefit from the gesture. Each of the 796 beneficiaries are heads of their households – and a household according UN standards, is made of at least six persons.
Rahis linked the rise in hardship to the removal of fuel subsidies and rising costs, which have plunged many into suffering. The rice distribution aims to ease the burden on the community, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
“Each family will receive a substantial 50kg bag of rice,” he said while encouraging them not to sell the provision but to use it to sustain their families.
The lawmaker reiterated his commitment to supporting his constituents, mirroring the promises made during his campaign. He also praised Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his similar efforts in providing food and financial aid to the people.
In a goodwill message, the APC Borno State Secretary Barr. Mustapha Luskurima hailed Rahis’ initiative, which involved the impressive sum of N70 million worth of rice, urging other state politicians to follow in his footsteps and address the pressing economic challenges faced by their communities.
One of the aged female beneficiaries, Ya Kaka thanked the House of Reps member for giving her hope of surviving the waves of hunger that has bedevilled her and her family.
“Only God will reward him for thinking about us during this month of Ramadan – this bags of rice will assist me and my grand children, ” she said.
