Borno State has made a landmark investment in the future of healthcare by allocating over ₦1.5 billion to fund scholarships for student nurses, as part of its long-term development strategy.

This financial commitment underscores the state’s pledge to establish an equitable society with robust education and healthcare systems.

The government’s allocation is part of a comprehensive scholarship program that saw 997 student nurses successfully pass entrance examinations, with a significant number coming from local government nominations.

“We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable society and delivering qualitative education,” announced Governor Babagana Zulum, emphasizing the importance of these pillars in the state’s 25-year development plan.

The substantial funding includes ₦124,149,000 set aside for tuition fees, while the remaining ₦1,181,040,000 will be used for monthly stipends of ₦30,000 to each scholarship beneficiary throughout their academic journey.

Governor Zulum Addresses Nursing Students

“Our investment in education and healthcare is a testament to our belief in the transformative power of these sectors,” Governor Zulum, a Professor of Irrigation Engineering said. The state’s approach combines grassroots efforts with open applications to ensure that opportunities are available to all eligible residents.

Recipients of the scholarships are expected to enter into a five-year bond with the state government, committing to serve in their local communities upon graduation. This bond aims to ensure that the benefits of their education have a direct impact on local healthcare provision. However, the government respects individual autonomy, offering students the choice to decline the bond.

The state government added that,”By prioritizing investments in the training of our people, we enable them to fulfill their potentials and drive progress in various fields.”

Earlier, Dr. Wakilbe, the state Commissioner for Education, praised the government for its significant investment in education. He highlighted the ongoing support provided by the Governor through scholarships to nursing students and other medical and paramedical students throughout the state.
