Fifteen visually impaired men in Borno state have chosen the path of honor by pursuing education instead of resorting to begging on the streets. And in recognition of their determination, the government has granted them automatic employment.

Governor Babagana Zulum gave express approval for their employment at a meeting he had with a group of visually impaired persons last week.

The governor stated that he provided them with official approval for employment in the state civil service because he was impressed by their determination to pursue education up to the university level.

“I am delighted to note that despite your disability, you are not lazy; you have decided to pursue your education, and for this, I want to commend you,” Zulum said.

“I have directed the Commissioner of Education to process your application for employment for my approval immediately. Therefore, I want to bring to your kind notice that you should be on the payroll of Borno State Government effective 1st May 2024, in sha Allah.”

Governor Zulum instructed the commissioner of education, Engineer Lawan Wakilbe, to assess the operations of all blind schools in Borno State to enhance the training of more individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, Zulum mandated the Ministry of Education to develop plans for incorporating special education programs at the College of Education in Bama.

The Borno state chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Mohammed Mustapha, who led the group to meet Governor Zulum thanked the government for the support given to his group members in the state.

“I am pleased that they have earned qualifications in various fields. Let’s enhance the College of Education in Bama to offer special education courses,” directed Zulum.
