Borno State’s pensioners have lauded Governor Babagana Zulum for his decisive action in ensuring the timely payment of pensions and gratuities, despite the state’s security challenges.
Members of the National Union of Pensioners (NUP) gathered in Maiduguri, representing branches across all 27 local government areas. The union’s Chairman, Comrade Musa Alhaji Bukar, praised the governor’s unwavering focus on citizens’ welfare.
“In the face of substantial security-related expenses, Governor Zulum has not wavered in his commitment to our state’s retirees,” stated Comrade Bukar. “His directive to double the monthly fund for outstanding gratuities has brought significant improvement to the lives of many, spurring economic growth.”
Governor Zulum’s initiative to increase the gratuity fund from N100 million to N200 million monthly has been a game-changer for the retired populace. The union highlighted the governor’s efforts, mentioning the payment of 50% pension arrears to over a thousand retirees and the clearance of pension arrears for primary school board members.
“Governor Zulum’s actions have not only settled outstanding debts but have also instilled a renewed sense of hope among our members,” Comrade Bukar added. “The prompt payment and the resolution of pension-related issues have been commendable strides.”
The chairman’s address also underscored the importance of the government’s continuous support and urged for a review of pensions to keep up with the escalating cost of living.
In a bid to set a benchmark for other states, the NUP issued a communiqué calling on governors nationwide to take a leaf out of Governor Zulum’s book. The union’s message is clear: prioritize the welfare of the pensioners who have dutifully served the civil sector, and foster unity among its members.
“Our meeting today is not only a celebration of victories but also a call to action for continual improvement in the lives of our valued retirees,” concluded Comrade Bukar.
