The Managing Director of the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC), Goni Alkali, visited the Specialists Hospital Maiduguri on Tuesday to express solidarity with the victims of the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza town, Borno state.
Accompanied by senior management staff of the commission, the MD was welcomed by the Medical Director of the hospital, who guided him through the wards where 24 survivors of the explosion were undergoing treatment for a range of injuries.
Engaging with the patients and offering words of encouragement, the MD urged them to remain resilient in the face of adversity and view their circumstances as part of their destiny.
The Medical Director informed the NEDC chief that a total of 42 patients affected by the Gwoza bombings had been admitted over the weekend, with some casualties reported, 14 individuals discharged, and 24 still under medical care.

In response to the tragic events, the MD of NEDC unequivocally denounced the attacks, stressing the need for a comprehensive response.
“We must not ignore the possibility of such incidents occurring again,” he remarked. “It is a somber reality. Despite our intentions to visit Gwoza, logistical challenges prevent us from doing so at present. Consequently, we are in dialogue with the state government and other stakeholders to develop a holistic strategy to address this situation.”
He continued, “We must also investigate the underlying reasons for these attacks. They occurred at a wedding ceremony and a burial, both crowded venues. I anticipate that the state government will establish a committee to investigate these events.”
The MD highlighted the commission’s commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the tragedy, pending further discussions with the state government to determine the extent of the impact on individuals and communities.
