President Joe Biden has yielded to party pressure and announced his withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential race, where he had sought to extend his tenure in the White House. He also preferred his female Vice President, Kamala Harris, to be the party’s candidate.

“And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote on his X handle.

In a follow-up tweet, Biden reflected that his initial choice as the party’s nominee in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as his Vice President.

“And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” he said.

At 81, Biden holds the record as the oldest sitting US president in the nation’s history. His health issues have posed challenges to his physical and cognitive abilities, qualities expected of a leader in the world’s greatest democracy.

His decision to step down from the race has plunged his party into a state of uncertainty. President Biden has lost the confidence of his fellow Democrats, who have openly questioned his mental capacity following his lackluster performance in the recent Presidential Debate against his rival, Donald Trump. Around 30 Democratic Congress members have publicly called for his immediate replacement.

The BBC noted that Biden’s resignation as the Democrats’ flag bearer “leaves the Democratic Party in an unprecedented situation, with only a month until the Democratic National Convention and less than four months until the November 5 election.”

As of now, the Democrats face the daunting task of finding a capable politician to replace President Biden and potentially secure victory in the upcoming presidential election.

Trump Responds

The Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has in his X handle said “Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve. ”

“All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t,”

“We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!,” he boasted.
