Maiduguri, Nigeria– In continuation of its advocacy for menstrual hygiene awareness, the Ummi Rashida Care Foundation marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day by conducting a campaign across eight communities and secondary schools in Maiduguri.
The foundation’s efforts, aimed at empowering young girls, highlighted the importance of reusable sanitary pads in both personal health and environmental sustainability.
The campaign focused on educating over 1,000 girls about menstrual hygiene and the benefits of using reusable pads.

“We emphasized the importance of reusable pads due to the hardships we are facing,” said Aisha Adamu, the CEO of the URCF.
A participant from Mairi Day Secondary School said “Not only do the reusable pads help us manage our periods better, but they also reduce waste.”
The foundation reached out to several educational institutions, including GG Yerwa, GGSSS Konduga, Zajeri Secondary, Sanda Kyarimi Secondary, and Uthman Bin Affan Orphanage School. Each school received donations of reusable pads, which were well-received by the students.

“I never knew that using reusable pads could be so comfortable and eco-friendly,” shared Amina Saleh, a student at GG Yerwa. “This campaign has changed my perspective on menstrual hygiene. I feel more confident and empowered.”
Ms Aisha Adamu hinted further that the initiative also served as a platform to advocate for broader environmental consciousness. “Using biodegradable products is crucial in our fight against climate change,” she said.
“By promoting reusable pads, we are not just supporting girls; we are taking a stand for our planet.”

As the campaign concluded, participants expressed gratitude for the knowledge they gained and the products provided.
“This programme has given us the tools we need to manage our periods with dignity,” said Zainab Ibrahim from Uthman Bin Affan Orphanage School. “We are now more aware of our bodies and the environment.”
The Ummi Rashida Care Foundation’s efforts are a vital step toward ensuring that young girls in Maiduguri have the resources and knowledge necessary to navigate menstruation confidently, while also championing sustainable practices for a healthier planet.
