Justice Haruna Mshelia, a high-profile judge in Borno State, Nigeria, has been released after being abducted by suspected Boko Haram militants on June 24, 2024. The judge was traveling from Biu town with his wife, a magistrate, his cousin who served as his driver, and an official police orderly when their vehicle was ambushed.

The attack took place between Buratai and Gujba village, where unidentified gunmen opened fire, killing the police orderly and subsequently taking Justice Mshelia and his companions into the surrounding jungle. This incident has raised concerns about the ongoing security challenges in northeast Nigeria, where Boko Haram continues to pose a significant threat.

For nearly three months, little information emerged regarding Justice Mshelia’s condition. However, whispers within governmental circles suggested that high-level negotiations were underway for his release. During his captivity, it was reported that Justice Mshelia was separated from his wife and driver, intensifying fears for their safety.

The news of his release was shared on a WhatsApp platform used by the legal community in Borno. A message posted on Saturday evening expressed relief, stating, “Alhamdulillah, we have just received the news of the release of Justice Haruna Mshelia.”

Despite the positive development, the situation remains dire for his wife and driver, who are still being held captive. A follow-up message on the platform urged community members to pray for their safe return, highlighting the ongoing plight of families affected by the insurgency.

Barrister Hamza Zannah, chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Maiduguri branch, confirmed the news of Justice Mshelia’s release in a phone interview with HumAngle. He stated, “Yes, the Judge has been released yesterday and we have information that he is fine, though we have not seen him in person yet.”

Justice Mshelia has a notable background, having transitioned from private legal practice to the bench in May 2012. He was one of the few judges appointed from private practitioners in Borno State, recognized for his commitment to justice. His colleague, Justice Mohammed Fadawu, was recently elevated to the appeal court, further emphasizing the caliber of judges in the region.

As the legal community celebrates Justice Mshelia’s return, efforts continue to secure the release of his wife and driver, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.
