Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched the construction of 500 housing units in Wala, Gwoza Local Government Area, northeast Nigeria, aimed at providing shelter for families displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. He equally launched a ₦50 million empowerment scheme for 1000 women affected by the conflict in the state.

During a foundation-laying ceremony on Wednesday, Zulum emphasized that the new housing estate will include essential facilities such as a hospital, school, and water points.

“In fulfillment of our campaign promise to resettle communities affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, we are kicking off the construction of 500 homes through our stabilization facility,” Zulum stated.

The governor urged contractors to prioritize quality, warning that his administration would not accept substandard work.

“Most of the contractors are from Gwoza and are members of this community. This initiative is part of our commitment to support local contractors and stimulate the grassroots economy,” he added.

“I want to see quality work. Let me be clear: we will not condone anything less than excellence, Zulum said.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Abdullahi Buba Abatcha, the member representing Gwoza at the State House of Assembly; Hon. Sugun Mai Mele, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs; and Gwoza Local Government Chairman Abba Kawu Idrisa Timta.

In a separate initiative, Governor Zulum has approved a N50 million empowerment package for 1,000 women farmers in the state, aimed at helping them regain their livelihoods. Each participating farmer will receive N50,000 to support their agricultural activities.
