Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has emphasized his administration’s focus on job creation by providing support to the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the state.
Speaking during a visit to Coplad Nigeria Ltd., a rice milling factory located on the Maiduguri-Bama highway, the governor highlighted the critical role SMEs play in fostering employment and alleviating poverty, particularly as Borno begins to recover from the protracted impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Governor Zulum emphasized that supporting SMEs is a cornerstone of his administration’s strategy to enhance economic opportunities for the people of Borno. He noted the significant financial investments made in recent years to empower local businesses, including the release of N814 million to 9,154 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in 2022. In 2021 alone, his government empowered 13,500 SMEs across various local government areas with N900 million.

In addition to direct financial support, Zulum’s initiatives included the distribution of 100 new Toyota taxis and 500 KEKE NAPEP vehicles at subsidized rates, aimed at stimulating job creation in the transportation sector. The governor also allocated over N350 million to assist a diverse range of artisans and traders within Maiduguri and Jere, further demonstrating his commitment to enhancing employment opportunities.
Before he depart the company, Governor Zulum directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Investment to evaluate the challenges facing Coplad Ltd. and to propose actionable support measures.
“One of the priorities of this administration is the provision of support to SMEs in the state,” he said. He also instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to supply locally cultivated paddy rice to the company, reinforcing the connection between agricultural productivity and job creation.

Professor Zulum urged the management of Coplad Ltd. to ensure consistent production to maximize its economic impact.
“We will provide all necessary support, but we must avoid interruptions in your operations. Let us explore both short-term and long-term solutions to ensure the sustainability of this factory,” he said.
The governor encouraged the establishment of additional modular factories to expand job opportunities, stating, “With your experience, I want you to look beyond this one, setting up other modular ones so we can create as many jobs as possible.”
