Borno State’s cultural delegation made a remarkable impact at the 2024 Abuja International Carnival, held from 21-25 November, securing the second overall position despite emerging from years of violent conflict.
The Abuja Carnival, a prestigious event attracting participants from Nigeria, Africa, and beyond, featured a variety of activities including an opening ceremony, command performances, street marches, fashion parades, and a culinary contest.
Borno’s contingent showcased the state’s rich cultural and historical artifacts and took part in all the major events, earning several accolades:

- 2nd Overall Best Carnival King Award
- 2nd Best in International Food Competition
- 2nd Best in Cultural Night Events
- 2nd Best Carnival Queen Award
- 2nd Best Carnival Costumes Award
- 3rd Best Indigenous Nigeria Fashion Parade
- 3rd Best Carnival Float Award
- 2nd Overall Best State Award ?

During the opening ceremony, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima expressed his appreciation for Borno’s participation, commending Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum for revitalizing the state’s cultural heritage. Similarly, the Minister for Culture and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, lauded Borno for their impressive display.
As Borno State recovers from a decade of insurgency, its active role in national cultural festivals highlights its resilience and commitment to overcoming challenges. The state’s participation underscores its deep historical roots and vibrant cultural identity.

Prof. Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, elaborated: “Borno’s 25-year development plan emphasizes cultural renaissance and social reorientation as key components of our recovery and sustainable development strategy. Under Governor Zulum’s leadership, we are taking bold steps to reposition Borno on the national cultural stage as a vital part of the Nigerian federation.”
