A major disaster was averted Wednesday night when an Abuja-bound Max Air plane caught fire in mid-air, prompting an emergency return to the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri.

The aircraft, carrying approximately 70 passengers, included Borno State Deputy Governor Usman Kadafur, who was traveling to Abuja for an official function.

Witnesses reported that the aircraft exhibited abnormal behavior just ten minutes after takeoff when one of its engines caught fire.

“The pilot had to shut down the malfunctioning engine while attempting to land using the other,” a passenger recounted. “After a terrifying ordeal, he successfully brought the aircraft back to the runway.”

A source close to the Deputy Governor described the harrowing experience, saying, “We had to bow down with our heads on the floor to thank God for sparing the lives of everyone on board.”

A Max Air staff member confirmed the incident, explaining, “The aircraft likely struck a bird, which damaged the engine and caused it to catch fire. Thankfully, the pilot managed to land safely, and the plane is currently grounded.”

Despite the intense experience, many passengers chose to forfeit their trips, although the Deputy Governor proceeded to Abuja on another aircraft.
