MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food and non-food items to approximately 10,000 vulnerable individuals, including orphans, widows, and people with disabilities, in Borno State.

The distribution is part of the commission’s Ramadan palliative program, designed to alleviate economic hardships during the holy month.

NEDC Managing Director Mohammed Alkali oversaw the distribution, stating that the aid aims to address the rising cost of essential goods. The distributed items included:
* 7,000 bags and cartons of rice and vegetable oil.
* 5,000 cartons of spaghetti.
* 5,000 pieces of “shaddah” traditional clothing.

In addition to the Ramadan aid, the NEDC has also provided assistance to 7,197 victims of recent floods in Maiduguri.
The NEDC plans to extend the Ramadan palliative distribution to the five other states within the Northeast region. The commission has also indicated that they have involved legislators, traditional rulers, and security agencies in the distribution process, to better ensure the aid reaches the intended recipients.
