Maiduguri, Borno State – In a notable gesture to commemorate Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum made unannounced visits to hospitals in Maiduguri on Thursday, where he provided direct financial assistance to over 2,000 patients.

The governor also visited the Maximum Correctional Center, Maiduguri where he granted different shades of amnesty to inmates and made similar cash donations to 1,280 of them.

Arriving at the State Specialist Hospital at 5:00 a.m., Governor Zulum sympathise with patients and provided a cash donation of N50,000 to each individual in the gynecology, antenatal, postnatal, and gynae emergency wards. This gesture, he stated during interactions with patients, was a reaffirmation of his administration’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services across Borno.

“We intend to extend this cash support to over 2000 patients in all our hospitals wards, including that of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,” said Zulum.

Exercising his constitutional prerogative of mercy, the governor of Borno State granted amnesty to 66 inmates at the Maximum Correctional Center in Maiduguri. This involved commuting death sentences to life imprisonment, reducing life sentences to a specified number of years, and ordering the immediate release of those serving fixed-term sentences.


The governor also  commissioned 20 completed road projects within the state completed under his tenure.

The governor, accompanied by his cabinet members, elders of Additionally, he will mark the groundbreaking for two new hospital projects – the Borno Orthopaedic Hospital in Goni Kachallari and a new General Hospital in Kaleri, both in Jere Local Government Area – as well as an international conference center in Maiduguri and Jere Local Government areas.


Over his six years in office, Governor Zulum’s administration has reportedly completed over 1,000 projects, with significant investments in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, road networks, water, and environmental initiatives, highlighting a substantial financial outlay towards the state’s development.
